TURN YOUR OUTDOOR ENTERTAINMENT AREA INTO A DESTINATION

A successful outdoor entertaining area should feel like somewhere you deliberately choose to spend time—not simply an unused space beside the house with a barbecue added to it.

The difference is rarely about spending more money. It comes from making a few clear decisions before construction begins.

Whether you are planning a covered deck, courtyard, pool area, outdoor kitchen or sheltered entertaining space, start by asking these five questions.

1. What will draw people into the space?

Every memorable outdoor area needs a focal point.

It might be a fireplace, pool, built-in barbecue, dining table, bar leaner or a strong architectural wall. This is the element that first attracts attention and gives the space a reason to exist.

Choose the focal point early. The layout, seating, lighting and surrounding materials can then be arranged to support it.

2. Where will people naturally sit and gather?

Think beyond simply fitting a table and chairs into the available space.

Consider where people will sit while food is being prepared, where conversations will happen and whether guests can comfortably move between the cooking, dining and lounging areas.

The best entertaining spaces allow the person cooking to remain part of the occasion rather than being separated from everyone else.

3. What weather needs to be controlled?

Pay attention to the prevailing wind, afternoon sun, rain direction and the need for privacy.

A carefully positioned wall, screen, roof extension or soffit can make an outdoor area significantly more comfortable without completely enclosing it.

Protection from the wrong direction can be the difference between a space that looks impressive and one that is genuinely used throughout the year.

4. What will bring the design together?

Choose one defining material or architectural detail that gives the space its identity.

Rather than restricting it to one isolated feature wall, consider repeating the material across another nearby surface. This could be a short adjoining wall, the wall opposite, a privacy screen, or a continuation from the wall into the soffit or ceiling.

The repetition does not need to dominate the area. Used carefully, it creates a visual connection that makes the entire space feel composed and intentional.

Charred and brushed timber can provide this architectural anchor. Its texture changes throughout the day as the light moves across it, giving an outdoor area warmth, depth and a strong sense of permanence.

5. How should the space feel after dark?

Outdoor entertaining often continues long after the sun has gone down, so lighting should be considered during the design—not added as an afterthought.

Use lighting to reveal materials, illuminate the barbecue and preparation areas, and create a warmer atmosphere around seating.

Soft wall lighting, concealed lighting and carefully positioned downlights will usually create a more inviting result than one bright light in the centre of the ceiling.

Textured timber is particularly effective under low, raking light, where the shadows reveal the depth and character of the surface.

Start with the experience

Before choosing individual products, decide how you want the area to be used and how you want it to feel.

Identify the focal point. Position the seating around it. Control the weather. Plan the lighting. Then select the material that will bring those decisions together.

That is how an outdoor area becomes more than functional.
